Transparent and accountable government for The City Beautiful.
Accountable Elections
Coral Gables municipal elections are held in the month of April – misaligned with the general election period, when voters are more likely to vote, and are in the mindset to research and prepare for elections. Accountable Coral Gables proposes moving Coral Gables Municipal Elections to the August primary and any runoff will take place during the November general election, significantly increasing voter participation, while saving the city over $200,000.00 per election.
Accountable Compensation
Coral Gables Elected Officials currently have the authority to grant themselves raises with a simple majority vote by the commission. The commissioners have the right to choose if, when, and how large of a raise to give themselves – which would be an unacceptable policy in any other corporate governance structure. We propose that raises to elected officials – including Mayor, Vice Mayor, and Commissioners – only be ratified through a majority popular vote via election referendum.
Accountable Use of Reserve Funds
The Coral Gables Reserve Fund can be accessed by City Officials at any time, with a simple 3/5 majority vote. The reserve fund should not be treated as petty cash and was established for use in emergencies. Accountable Coral Gables proposes a requirement of a super-majority – or 4/5 Commissioners – to access the City’s Reserve Fund.
Our Mission
The City Beautiful deserves a transparent and accountable government that answers to the people. Accountable Coral Gables was created to deliver on this objective, and will begin with three fundamental petitions that will shape the City’s future.
